Focus of Scientific and Clinical Activities
Univ. Prof. DDr. Erwin Jonke is leading the Division of Orthodontics since2018. Since that time the Division of Orthodontics evolved to be 100% digital, starting from the first appointment over the treatment planning phase to 3D printed orthodontic appliances for accurate orthodontic treatments. To facilitate a truly digital working process for patients and staff members, multiple software solutions and orthodontic providers are in use for patient treatments. The effectiveness and accuracy of the applied software systems and treatment devices are currently investigated by ongoing studies. The initial research activities of Univ. Prof. DDr. Erwin Jonke
were focused on evolutionary studies, involving craniofacial morphology and
odontogenesis by geometric morphometric means investigating skeletal samples
from over the last 2000 years. In the past years, he extended his academic interest to various hot topics of orthodontic research. As one of the orthodontists with the highest experience in aligner orthodontics, Univ. Prof. DDr. Erwin Jonke provided experimental setups for testing the effects of major aligner materials on oral cells.
Further, the effects of aligner treatment on the oral microbiome represent pivotal cornerstones of current projects. Another research topic is a large-scaled questionnaire-based multicenter study investigating the experiences and expectations of patients with aligner treatment. These research activities have been awarded by a number of national and international grants such as the "Medical-scientific fund of the Mayor of the federal capital Vienna" or a two-year "Invisalign® research award".
